Now touted as the most ‘ambitious city centre regeneration project in the UK’, throughout 2022 I was the Lead Construction Site Manager for the Riverside MSCP Carpark located at the Urban Quarter located in Sunderland city centre.

SRM contracted Goldbeck to deliver a ‘Turnkey’ package multi-storey car park. The project scope was to deliver the MSCP with 668 parking spaces over 12 split levels. The first challenges involved the existing limestone on which the building stood. The installation of the in-situ foundations were coordinated by the geotechnical engineer to ensure the right level and type of support was given.

The main structure comprised precast staircases, steel beams and columns as well as bespoke Goldbeck precast concrete slabs. I was responsible for the logistical aspects, ensuring all materials for the main structure were properly sourced from Ireland, Czech Republic and Germany and arrived on time and for the coordination of assembly teams, cranes and transports. The cladding consisted of custom made steel panels with a drilled pattern to reflect the waves of the sea and a life green wall.

Furthermore, we installed over 200 EV charging points as well 2000 m2 PV panels on the corrugated metal sheet roof. The building also consists of offices, technical rooms, changing places and welfare units as the building is permanently staffed.

This car park was the biggest ever built by Goldbeck Construction Ltd. and required close collaboration with designers and structural engineers. It has since been selected for an architectural award and enjoys strong public support.
