I was the site manager for the development of this multi-story car park (MSCP) which is located in the centre of historic Durham in the North East. Durham County Council contracted Goldbeck to deliver their turnkey package for the MSCP excluding the groundworks, which the client carried out themselves directly, and required the development of 277 parking spaces over 8 split levels.
During the groundworks stage, we assured the quality of the cast by using a base plate installation as the tolerances are very low compared to the most common way of installing columns.
The main structure comprised the same precast steel and concrete components as in my previous project. The cladding consisted of approximately 3.5m long timber ‘fins’ vertically mounted to the structure, and ‘hit-and-miss’ brick panels at the ground level as well as technical rooms constructed of block work.
Last but not least, we installed around 50 EV charging points to accommodate the growing popularity of electric vehicles.
You can learn more about Durham County Council’s broader vision for housing, jobs and the environment in their “County Durham Plan” which influenced the launch of this project.
